Notary Public

What on earth is a Notary Public?

Very few people know what a Notary Public is until they have cause to use one! The office of a Notary Public is a very ancient one, having its origins in Roman times and Notaries are still governed by the offices of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

You will usually need to see a Notary Public if you need to execute documents for use outside of England and Wales. A Notary may also be required to certify copy documents which need to be produced abroad. The qualification of a Notary is generally recognised throughout the world and in many cases documents will not be valid abroad unless they have been authenticated by a Notary Public.

Partner, Sue Houghton, is a Notary Public, having qualified in 1996. She is one of only two Notary Publics in Wigan and was trained by her father Eddie Houghton who for many years was the town's only Notary Public.

Sue can advise you on requirements for executing documents for use abroad.

In many cases the document will also have to be produced at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and/or at the Consulate. This process is usually called 'legalisation' but you may also hear it referred to as obtaining the apostille under the Hague Convention. This is merely the process for the Notary's signature and seal to be authenticated as that of a genuine Notary Public We can advise you on the legalisation process and through our links with Notaries in London can arrange for an expedited 48 hour service.
